1920: The Dawn of the Modern Era

The world emerged from the shadow of the Great War into a year crackling with transformation. Women secured the right to vote when Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment on August 18, forever changing American democracy—a victory celebrated in newspapers and magazines nationwide. The League of Nations convened its first executive council meeting in Paris on January 16, though the U.S. Senate voted against joining on March 19, a decision that dominated headlines throughout the spring. On November 2, Pittsburgh's KDKA made history with the first commercial radio broadcast, announcing Warren G. Harding's presidential victory and ushering in the age of mass communication. Meanwhile, in Canton, Ohio, legendary athlete Jim Thorpe became the first president of the American Professional Football Association—later renamed the NFL—on September 17. This was the world your loved one entered in 1920, preserved in the pages of the era's most celebrated publications.
