January 1988: The Year America's Momentum Shifted
The Historical Context
The world began 1988 watching two seismic power plays unfold. In Washington, the Supreme Court confirmation of Judge Anthony Kennedy signaled a generational shift in American jurisprudence, while Vice President George H.W. Bush's contentious clash with CBS anchor Dan Rather over Iran-Contra dominated living rooms nationwide—a televised confrontation that would foreshadow November's election. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and President Ronald Reagan formalized the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement, redrawing North America's economic map. In the sports world, Washington Redskins quarterback Doug Williams made history at Super Bowl XXII, becoming the first African American quarterback to win the championship. This was the world your loved one entered in January 1988—a month when the guardrails of the previous decade began to give way.
Broadway's stages glittered with Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" opening at the Majestic Theater, destined to become the longest-running show in Broadway history, while George Harrison's "Got My Mind Set On You" topped the charts and his nostalgic "When We Was Fab" reminded audiences of Beatlemania. On the tennis courts, Steffi Graf defeated Chris Evert to claim her first Australian Open title, and Mats Wilander outlasted hometown favorite Pat Cash in an epic five-set final. Mike Tyson defended his undisputed heavyweight title with a fourth-round demolition of Larry Holmes. The third Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony enshrined The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and The Supremes. Original magazines from January 1988 captured these moments through vivid sports photography, Broadway advertisements for the just-opened "Phantom," and entertainment features chronicling the changing television landscape as "48 Hours" premiered on CBS.
