July 2004: The Month the World Held Its Breath

The Historical Context

The summer of 2004 arrived with the world watching two very different countdowns. High above Saturn's rings, the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft completed its extraordinary orbital insertion on July 1st, humanity's most ambitious deep-space mission in a generation threading a needle between celestial debris at 01:12 UTC. Back on Earth, the mood was equally charged. In Lisbon, a sporting miracle unfolded when Greece—given almost no chance by anyone—defeated host nation Portugal 1-0 to claim the UEFA European Championship title in one of football's greatest upsets. Stateside, accountability was in the air: corporate titan John Rigas of Adelphia Communications was convicted of fraud on July 8th, and Martha Stewart accepted her fate on July 16th, sentenced to five months in prison for lying to federal investigators. Chicago opened Millennium Park that same week, unveiling what Mayor Richard M. Daley called the most ambitious architectural project of the new century. This was the world alive and unsettled in July 2004—the world your loved one witnessed.

What the World Was Watching, Wearing, and Winning

On the grass courts of Wimbledon, two legends were being forged simultaneously. A 17-year-old Maria Sharapova became the first Russian to win the women's title, dismantling defending champion Serena Williams 6-1, 6-4 in a performance that stunned Centre Court. The very next day, Roger Federer claimed his second consecutive Wimbledon crown, dispatching Andy Roddick in four sets. Sports Illustrated and the back pages of every major publication were consumed by tennis all month long. Golf delivered its own drama: Meg Mallon fired a final-round 65 at the US Women's Open to take the title, while Todd Hamilton upset Ernie Els in a playoff at the British Open. Original magazines from July 2004 capture a pop culture landscape equally vivid off the field—Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle hit cinema screens on July 30th, and Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel closed their reunion tour before an estimated 600,000 fans at the Colosseum in Rome, one of the largest concert crowds ever assembled.
