March 2004: The World on Edge

The Historical Context

March 2004 arrived with the weight of a world still finding its footing in the post-9/11 era—and before the month was out, that unease would deepen dramatically. The Madrid train bombings of March 11 defined the month's darkest hour: ten coordinated explosions tore through the Spanish capital's commuter rail system, killing 190 people and wounding nearly 2,000 in the deadliest terrorist attack in Europe since Lockerbie. The world watched, grief-stricken, as Spain grappled with both mourning and political reckoning. In Iraq, the violence was relentless—Al Qaeda's Ashoura Massacre on March 2 killed 170 pilgrims, and by month's end, four Blackwater contractors were ambushed and killed in Fallujah, their fate splashed across every front page. Yet amid the carnage, there were moments of historic construction: Iraq's Governing Council signed a new constitution, and seven nations—Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia—formally joined NATO. This was the world your loved one inhabited in March 2004.

What America Was Watching, Buying, and Talking About

Pop culture in March 2004 offered both escape and reflection. In cinemas, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind premiered in Los Angeles on March 9, Michel Gondry's surreal meditation on memory and heartbreak starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet—a film that would define the decade's indie aesthetic. On television, HBO launched Deadwood on March 21, David Milch's profane and brilliant Western that immediately commanded critical attention. Original magazines from March 2004 capture the full sweep of the month's cultural energy: Usher's Confessions dropped on March 23, setting up what would become the year's dominant R&B album, while the Soul Train Music Awards celebrated Beyoncé, OutKast, and Janet Jackson. On the sports pages, 23-year-old Adam Scott won the PGA Players Championship, and Peyton Manning signed a landmark $98 million NFL deal with the Colts. Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, and Life-era publications chronicled it all in the vivid, unhurried long-form style of the era.
