May 1968: The Month Revolution Shook the World
The Historical Context
The spring air crackled with defiance. In Paris, cobblestones torn from centuries-old streets became barricades as students and workers ignited what would become the largest general strike in French history—a revolt against President Charles De Gaulle that paralyzed France and inspired global youth movements. Across the Atlantic, Vietnam peace talks began in Paris even as the war raged on, while the Poor People's Campaign marched into Washington demanding economic justice. In Czechoslovakia, Alexander Dubček's liberalizing reforms promised a brief "Prague Spring" before Soviet tanks would crush it. And beneath the headlines of political upheaval, America witnessed Catfish Hunter's perfect game, the Beatles launching Apple Corps, and Mick Jagger's arrest—the collision of establishment and counterculture playing out in real time. This was the world your loved one entered in May 1968: a planet in beautiful, chaotic transformation.
The cultural landscape pulsed with raw energy that spring. Columbia Records released Johnny Cash's raw, redemptive "At Folsom Prison," capturing the outlaw spirit of the age, while Creedence Clearwater Revival's debut album introduced John Fogerty's swamp-rock fury to radio dials. Richard Harris' dramatic "MacArthur Park" dominated charts with its baroque seven-minute sprawl—the kind of ambitious pop experimentation that defined 1968. Sports fans witnessed the Boston Celtics claim their tenth NBA championship and Bobby Unser's first Indy 500 victory, while baseball purists marveled at Willie Stargell's five-hit explosion and Al Kaline surpassing Hank Greenberg in Tigers history. Fashion magazines showcased the mod revolution in full bloom—miniskirts, bold geometric patterns, and youth-driven style that shocked traditional sensibilities. Original magazines from May 1968 preserve this electrifying moment: movie ads for psychedelic films, Apple Records announcements in music trades, and sports photography capturing athletes in grainy, authentic glory.
