Glenn Miller: The Bandleader Who Vanished at the Height of the Swing Era

The Legend & The Legacy

For a few golden years at the dawn of the 1940s, no sound defined America quite like Glenn Miller's. His orchestra was the biggest act of the swing era, and its recordings—"In the Mood," "Moonlight Serenade," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "A String of Pearls"—became the soundtrack of a generation dancing on the edge of a world war. Miller was a meticulous craftsman, a trombonist and arranger who engineered a lush, instantly recognizable sound built around a clarinet lead, and he turned it into staggering commercial success, earning what is often cited as the first gold record. Then, at the peak of his fame, he traded the bandstand for the military, forming the Army Air Force Band to lift the spirits of troops overseas. In December 1944, the small plane carrying him across the English Channel to Paris disappeared without a trace. He was forty years old. No wreckage was ever found, and the mystery of his final flight transformed an already beloved figure into an enduring legend.

The archive preserves the reception of a bandleader whose sound still evokes an entire era.
