Pancho Villa: The Revolutionary Who Became a Legend

The Legend & The Legacy

Few figures of the 20th century blur the line between history and myth as thoroughly as Pancho Villa. A commanding general of the Mexican Revolution, he led the fearsome División del Norte with a mix of tactical daring and showmanship that made him a folk hero to Mexico's poor—a Robin Hood on horseback who seized land from the wealthy and captured the imagination of a nation in upheaval. His exploits were so cinematic that he signed contracts with American film companies to stage and film his battles. But it was a raid across the border that seared his name into American memory: in 1916 Villa's forces struck Columbus, New Mexico, prompting the United States to send General John J. Pershing and thousands of troops on a "Punitive Expedition" deep into Mexico to hunt him down. They never caught him. Villa remained at large, elusive and legendary, until his assassination in 1923. To this day he stands as one of history's most romanticized rebels—a bandit to his enemies, a champion of the people to his admirers, and an enduring symbol of revolution.

Inside the Archive

The vintage press covered Villa as a figure of fascination and alarm on both sides of the border. American news publications tracked his campaigns, the Columbus raid, and the dramatic pursuit that followed, while later retrospectives revisited his outsized role in the Mexican Revolution and the myths that grew around him. Coverage captured both the genuine military and political force he represented and the legend that has never stopped growing. The archive preserves the reception of a revolutionary whose story reads like an epic.
