To make a quirky supernatural comedy on a modest budget, Tim Burton entrusted first-time visual effects supervisor Alan Munro with Beetlejuice. With Robert Short handling creatures and makeup, Peter Kuran providing opticals and miniatures, and Doug Beswick, Ted Rae, and Tim Lawrence animating wild sequences, the team pulled off hundreds of imaginative effects shots that gave the film its unique look. Batteries Not Included posed the challenge of making tiny alien saucers believable on live-action sets and bluescreen stages.
