  • The Cover
    • In the spring a young, middle-aged or old man’s fancy lightly turns to depleting the fish population. Simultaneously the fancy of fishes turns to depleting the insect population, which plays right into the hands of fly casters who are eager to accommodate them. Those anglers on the cover are dreaming dreams; they are in New York City (see Keeping Posted, page 132), but don’t wake them up, because they think they’re far away in the bosky countryside beside a purling stream. As for artist George Hughes, he used to do some fishing, but he caught nothing with such regularity that one day he blew his top and, so to speak, swore off. He could try a fish caller like the gadget there on the counter; it buzzes under water like tasty flies. But he still would have to catch the fish.
