The Cover
- Artist John Clymer theorizes that it is a bass making all that rumpus in the evening water. If papa muffs his chance to scoop the rumpus into the boat and if the bass, unhitched itself, takes off for home, everybody will feel like crying, including papa, but not including the fish. Fortune so far has beamed on Johnny, for a bass is a game fish, very athletic. When a bass gulps a reeled-in lure, things happen pronto; Johnny’s fish might have wound up inextricably involved with a waterlogged log, or it might have unhooked itself so as to leave nothing on the line but a lei of water lilies. Well, fish or no fish, isn’t the true joy of angling the glory of a rose-and-gold sunset, the soothing peace of a looking-glass lake, the—oh, never mind, papa, we want a bass, we want a bass!
