- A lot of nice things have happened, but those gloomy guys don’t seem to know it. The sun has crossed the equator in the right direction; the first robin has sung cheerfully for rain; the snow has turned to sweet-smelling mud; and little Miss Spring herself has come to the subway. Well, nature will get those tired executives yet; they’ll catch hoe fever, make a garden and get tired. Meanwhile, painter Hughes, who used to live in the New York subway except when he came up into civilization for a drink of air, now dwells smugly on a Vermont mountainside, not caring whether it is winter or summer, as he loves skiing and fishing. It’s been a mild winter, he reports, just like last fall, the scientists and woolly-bear caterpillars did not predict.
