  • The Cover — Cast of characters: man on diet, girlish gourmand. Scene 1: “Ah, that divine shortcake! My soul, I’m hungry all over again!” Scene 2: “No.” Scene 3: So for him a demitasse to top off a demidinner. Scenes 4 to finis: Artist Alajalov doesn’t know about this, but once, long ago, there was a boy who had a beloved dog, and there was a family rule, known full well to both of them, that the dog must not be fed in the dining room. One night during a steak dinner the dog with tragic eyes sat and watched the boy’s fork go up and down, up and down. When the boy cracked up and slipped his pal a wisp of gristle, the dog looked just like Mr. Demi in Scene 9. Art editor Ken Stuart saw part of this cover unfold in a restaurant, and Alajalov added the happy ending out of overwhelming pity.
