When inventor Thomas E. Murray bought a summer home in Southampton, L.I., in the 20’s, it meant the wealthy Irish would soon be arriving in abundance. The resort’s WASP families greeted them with the expected snubs and a certain bemused contempt. With their strength in numbers and Celtic joie de vivre, however, the newcomers transformed the quiet town—and even penetrated the top echelon of society. The 1931 photograph shows Mrs. Thomas E. Murray Jr. and her children standing before their beachhead house. Page 15.
