  • THIS WEEK’S COVER
    • Artist Mead Schaeffer contributes another to our series of original covers—a sort of geographical American family album—with a scene sketched south of New Orleans, in the bayou country, near Lafitte, Louisiana. He watched a harvest distinctive to the South. Moss pickers were hauling down boathooks of the beautiful Spanish moss which festoons trees in the South; it looked a little like taking down the Christmas decorations or stripping a ballroom the morning after a party. The moss is dried and used in upholstering. “It’s an air plant belonging to the pineapple family,” Schaeffer said learnedly. Trying to tell us that the stuff is well worth it. The Vermont artist put it this way: “It’s the same as maple sugaring in Vermont.”
